Water&Oil

For years now I support the WNF a.k.a. WWF, and what really bothers me is the oil pollution in the ocean. These oildissaster proof that drilling for oil goes with great risks. Particulary in sensitive areas like the Arctic, the consequences are horrible.

Since april 22 2010, oil is leaking from the sunken oilplatform Deepwater Horizon in the Golf of Mexico. Millions of liters of oil have streamed into the Golf. The oil slick has a surface of my country, the Netherlands. That's amazingly big and I can only imagine what this does for the ocean and everything that lives in it.

I appreciate president Barack Obama for forbidding Shell to start drilling for the coast of Alaska.
I just can't understand how our society got so lost. That gaining oil and luxury wins from the health and wellbeing of the creatures we have to live with. Luckily thousands of helpers are trying to make sure the coastline doesn't  get smeared with the oil to help animals in need. There are also a lot of people who are helping the hurt animals which are covered in oil.

We have to stand up for the wellbeing of our planet, and we have to stand up for those who can't ; the animals. the world is theirs just as well as it is ours. We have to fight people and organisations who believe otherwise and who are willing to harm nature for gaining more wealth. It is awful that after what happened in the Golf of Mexico, Shell wants to start drilling in one of the most vulnerable places of the earth. For Obama to forbid the drilling is great, but for companies like Shell to even think it is okay to gain wealth at the expense of our nature.. I just can't believe that. We have to stand up, not only talk about it, but actually do somethingt, because if the animals can't, and the people won't, who will?

Series Structural Contrast 10.

Yesterday I heard I passed my first year at the Art Academy. I study Interior Architecture and one of our assignments was to design a series of 'jewelry'. Not as in earrings or necklaces, but as in beautiful, extraordinary little creations.

The concept of my serie was to let two totally different materials communicate and compete with eachother. I formulated this concept with teabags, a very thin material, easy to reform and yet so fragile. And on the other hand metal; hard, cold and difficult to disfigure.

Inspiration: Sophia Bush

One of the people that inspire me most is Sophia Bush, great actress, spokesperson and part of fundraisers such as F Cancer, Run For the Gulf and Global Green Gulf Relief.
She uses Twitter to speak her mind and to confront injustice, human rights, starvation and environmental issues. She uses her voice for something real and she encourages everyone to know that their voice is valuable and therefore to use it.

Sophia Bush has a wonderful, warm- and kindhearted personality, who doens't only talk about things as environmental problems, but actually does something about it. And that's what I love about her. She is the kind of person I want to become some day. More of her to come on this blog, that's for sure.

One of Sophia's tweets;
My passion for the environment. My passion for equality. My love of people everywhere. Those are the things that make me. Thanks for sharing

Inspiration: Edith Bouvier Beale - Grey Gardens

- Edith Bouvier Beale (November 7, 1917 – circa January 9, 2002) was an American socialite, fashion model and cabaret performer. She was a first cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Lee Radziwill. She is best known as "Little Edie," -

Last week I watched the movie 'Grey Gardens' with  Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange. What really catched my attention, other than the great acting of Barrymore, was the decayed state of the interior and the dark romantic atmosphere. It reminded me of the work of Dutch Designer Maarten Baas, his series of burned furniture : Smoke

Inspiration: Ai Wei Wei

Famous Chinese artist, not only because of his work as an artist, architect and designer, but also for his battles for more political and social freedom.
I visited museum the Pont in Breda, the Netherlands, where work of Wei Wei is exposed. Ai Wei Wei sees art not only as a way of expression, but as a way to force changes, a way to ask questions at the chinese government and society and as a chance to comment on the social situation of his country.

Sunflower Seeds
An impressive work of Ai Wei Wei is Sunflower Seeds, millions of seeds in porcelain, hand-crafted by the workers in Jingdezhen, porcelaincapital of China.
During the Chinese Revolution, Mao Zedong was compared to the sun, while the seeds are a symbol for the millions of Chinese people who had to look up to their emperor.

Fuck Off
A series of photos from Ai Wei Wei, his way to tell the authorities to Fuck Off, speaks for itself I guess..

Ai Wei Wei has a lot of criticism against the corrupt Chinese government.  Trough his work he wants to reach people and encourage them to take action and to stand up for their rights. Unfortunately the Chinese government is firmply opposed to the statements of Ai Wei Wei. In 2011, Ai Wei Wei was even arrested, where he was treated very badly and even tortured. However he was released on bail few months later, he is not supposed to leave Peking.
I believe it is ridiculous that somebody is being punished so badly just for expressing his opinion or criticism. The huge difference in freedom of expression between my country and a country like China then becomes very clearly, and I realise how fortunate we are with so much freedom in the Netherlands.

What I realy appreciate about Ai Wei Wei is the fact that although the authorities crackdown on activists such as him, this does not stop him in continueing his work and to mark his view on current social issues in China.
